Longing for a break

About me

Writing about myself is akin to torture as I must push myself to write more than just my name.

Hi!  My name is Bryan Garnett-Law and I live in the northern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia.  By day I am a Webmaster, Graphic and Print designer, by night I’m a webaholic.

My hobbies include walking (when it isn’t hot, which in Perth means anything other than summer!), reading, movies and art.  I enjoy reading books that are generally a mix of fact with fiction, faction I guess you might call it.  My favourite authors include W. Michael Gear and Kathleen O’Neal Gear, Christian Jacq, J. K. Rowling, and sometimes Stephen King.  The Gears and Christian Jacq are archaeologists who have transitioned to writing fiction using information they’ve discovered from the archaeological background.  Recently I read a novel “The Sugar Camp Quilt” that revolved around pre-Civil War United States in which slaves from the southern states were assisted to escape to Canada with assistance of people from the northern states.  It was quite interesting the thought of using a quilt to create a map that at first sight looks like any other quilt, but to those in the know contains clues as to the next safe location – ingenious.

Movies have long been a passion of mine, even when I was a student on little money I would always find money to regularly head off to the flicks.  I have an extensive collection of DVD’s and, more recently, Blu-ray high definition movies.  My favourite genre is by far Science Fiction, including such greats as Star Trek, Star Wars, The Matrix and Stargate.  Other favourite movies include Lord of the Rings, Ever After, Pirates of the Caribbean, and too many to list here.  One movie I cannot wait to purchase is Avatar, this movie was most certainly one of the finest I have ever seen, and I am proud to say my cousin’s fiancee was one of its animators – how jealous I am, sounds like a lot of fun!

Art is another passion of mine, in particular I am very partial to the Impressionists like Monet.  One day I may even undertake a painting course as I’d love to learn oil painting.  Related to art of course is a more recent hobby, photography.  In 2008 I took a UWA Extension course in photography composition delivered by professional photographer Bob Litchfield, during the course I learned several techniques that I didn’t already know, and also had the pleasure of viewing several photos taken by others in the class.  On day 2 of the class we headed off to Fremantle to apply the techniques that we’d learnt the day before, walking around the port city to photograph various scenes.  The final day we were to present our 2 best photos taken on day 2, I was certainly pleased to be told my photo was in the top 3 photos for the class.  In 2009 I purchased my first DSLR, a Canon EOS1000D, also the first time that I’d used any kind of SLR camera.  One of the first photoshoots I did was to head down to Cottesloe beach where a sculptures exhibition was underway, I could not have been happier with the outcome of this trip, one photo taken on this day I submitted to an amateur photography competition and was voted the winner – I was blown away!

If you’d like to look at a few of my photos I have them hosted at:

I also have a basic web page at http://www.garnett-law.com. I am working towards expanding this at the moment. If you’re not on broadband you might want to avoid it, it’s image intensive due to a lot of transparent PNGs. Check it out and leave me some feedback if you like it.

Well for someone who started this off with referring to writing about myself as a form of torture I think I’ve not done too badly, certainly more than I’d planned to write in any case.  Off to surf the web before my MacBook’s battery runs out – oh for wireless power!
