Longing for a break

Farewell 10.7.3, hello OS X 10.8 Preview

I got sent advice from Apple this morning that they’d released a Developer Preview of their next release operating system, OS X 10.8 (Code name: Mountain Lion). The first thing you notice is the dropping of Mac from the name, it is no longer referred to as Mac OS X but rather just OS X, I like this change, so much more simple and clean. Initially I wasn’t going to install this preview release, but after yet further problems tonight with 10.7.3 I just bit the bullet and said to myself it certainly couldn’t get much worse than what you’re already running with apps locking up all the time, Finder crashing, your fans not whirling up and the MacBook Pro heating up considerably, so install it I did.

The install process was lengthy, the download via the Apple Store after gaining my provisioning code took several hours. Once it had downloaded the actual process of installation took around 40 or so minutes I think, although I didn’t actually time it to give a real breakdown of times. The first step within the original Mac OS X took a few minutes after which you reboot and the main installation process begins.

I’ve only been running it now for under half an hour and it feels good thus far. Finder sure as hell hasn’t locked up on me yet, and the laptop hasn’t overheated, so we are thus far onto a winner over where we were earlier in the night. The notifications centre is a cool addition, I think I will quite like it, the fact that there is synchronisation between my Mac and my iPad/iPhone now with the notifications is great. I am also looking forward to seeing the iCloud Documents in the Cloud integration in apps, this will be great, I hope Microsoft will embrace this post-official launch with their Office products as it would be brilliant.

Safari has changed, there’s no longer two text boxes (address and search), it’s all-in-one. Tabs are also full-width of the window, not sure I like that so much. Further exploration to be done.
