Longing for a break

When an OS update and a hardware failure collide

Recently following my update to Mac OS X 10.7.3 I had taken my MacBook Pro to work on Friday as I typically do when in the other building as they are a Mac camp (they know decent machines when they see them, unlike my own office!!) and had been working away when around 2 or 3pm that afternoon the external monitor went awry and the picture pixelated and went completely unusable (it’s too hard to describe). At the time I thought that perhaps it was the update to the operating system as there’d been some problems associated with its release, a major problem had occurred for those who’d performed an upgrade using the System Update based upgrade (or used the Delta upgrade downloaded from the web). So, I naturally assumed that perhaps there were a few more bugs and I disconnected from the external monitor and worked only from the laptop itself and began searching the forums, including Apple’s Developer forums for any external monitor based problems, in particular those problems related to DVI based Apple Cinema Displays using the Mini DisplayPort -> DVI dongle.

My search yielded results that were totally unrelated which really frustrated me, I knew from having used my computer at home with the Mini DisplayPort -> VGA dongle that there were no problems there. So it was when I returned to work again this Friday and connected again that I had the same problem, and again I began searching for a solution. The web manager came in and made a comment, asking why I wasn’t working with both screens, so I explained that I thought perhaps 10.7.3 was having a problem with the monitor. It was only then that I learned that it wasn’t the OS but the monitor as their own staff member who sits at that desk Monday – Thursday uses 10.6.8 and has the same problem. They switched monitors and connected another computer to it, it too had the same problem, the monitor had given up the ghost and had gone to the great Apple Heaven so to speak.

I have to say I was really relieved that it was neither my computer hardware nor my operating system, last thing I wanted to face was a warranty replacement/repair which would see me without my computer for a period of time (however long that’d be).
