As I get used to my new all-in-one email, calendar, tasks and contacts client, Outlook 2011, I must reconcile with the fact this application isn’t at the moment fully baked. Why? Well, Microsoft decided to release this to the world without syncing support for the iPhone. Thus, any calendar items, or contact edits I make within Outlook 2011 will not be reflected on my iPhone, but similar changes made on my iPhone will sync to to Address Book and iCal on my Mac, not Outlook 2011.
A check of the blog associated with the MacBU at Microsoft has eluded to the fact that calendar syncing is coming, that it was close to being ready by the time they released the suite, but that it wasn’t quite there, so hopefully that means it isn’t too far off.

Referring to Andy Ruff’s (Microsoft Outlook for Mac Lead) recent explanations of why sync for calendar is not yet available, it causes many users great concern to see yet another ‘hidden issue’ from MS. The known problems with Entourage would have been pushing people away from it and towards the iCal domain, which would distort user data and development priorities. I am convinced that if MS get this right, and provide a fully integrated sync capability they will steal the major share of the productivity suite market on Mac and attract many over from the VM ware products also (of which I was one and currently wish I had stayed a while longer). Come on MS – although we appreciate the candid and logical nature of Andy Ruff’s explanation, and as a senior manager in the IT product space myself, open communications with the market BEFORE launch are really needed to stop eroding reputation. A lot of early adopter customers are feeling very let down and it was so avoidable. Clearly marketing power overrules product development common sense in MS as I suspect Andy would have liked to tell customers properly beforehand in a clear and unambiguous manner (but that would stem sales wouldn’t it?). Try it MS – be open up front and you will win more respect in the Mac space for sure.
Comment by Dean November 16, 2010 @ 11:35 amIt’s such crap that is doesn’t sync!! My Entourage was FINE with syncing to my iPhone, too. We should be told WHEN it will be available. Very disappointed and feel cheated.
Comment by Gary November 29, 2010 @ 5:08 amI’m starting to think this has a lot to do with the release of Window Phone 7 and their wanting to offer a fuller experience for their own phone platform and a lesser experience for a competitors (superior) platform. Couldn’t agree more, when are we going to get full sync services?
Comment by g04uld November 29, 2010 @ 6:14 amWow! Just upgraded Entourage to Outlook 2011 to find I can no longer sync to iCal. Unbelievable! Now I am going to have to wait until 2011 some time?

Wait until you spot all the other bugs that go with it – having used it for a few weeks now I am really wishing I had waited another year and stuck with my Windows version! Some nice ideas in the suite but way too many bugs and missing functionality…enjoy

Comment by Rick Wimberly March 28, 2011 @ 2:06 amWe are still waiting! Must be very, very complex issue!
Comment by g04uld March 28, 2011 @ 6:13 amit seems like Google developed this for other PC versions of Outlook… the key might be to put pressure on Google to develop this [http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/business/outlook_sync.html], since Microsoft may not have as much incentive, and of course wants to push users towards Exchange. I wonder how difficult it would really be to just use Exchange as a cloud conduit between say Outlook 2011, an iPhone and/or Droid?
