Windows 7 and anti-virus

After the problems with Windows 7 + AVG anti-virus I decided that I would trial another vendors product.  My cousin had recommended Trend Micro, so I thought that I would give it a go and see how we went, let’s just say it went BSOD (Blue Screen of Death).

I downloaded a trial version of the software from trendmicro.com and proceeded to install.  After installation had completed Windows 7 alerted me to the fact that there were problems with this version and 7 and to look for an update, which as luck might have it, there was.  The update downloaded and installed I was advised to restart Windows 7, and therein began my problems.  The update didn’t fix the problems, and attempts to download and install a beta that was apparently 7 compatible just wouldn’t work.

Faced with the problems of an anti-virus app that wouldn’t work I decided to look into another vendors wares, Symantec.  I began downloading their trial version, but before I could even finish the download 7 BSOD’d on me.  I went to uninstall it, the uninstall process just sat there doing sweet bloody nothing.  Restart.  Try uninstall again, again no luck!  At this point I tried to roll back to a previous save point, the process began, but it never actually proceeded, we BSOD again as Windows nears its time to do a warm reset.  Tried again, same result.

It was at this point I was thinking great, reinstall.  Before going that route I decided that I would go into services and disable any of the Trend Micro services.  With the services disabled I restarted once more, after restarting I again attempted the rollback, this time it worked.

So, what have we learned today?  Firstly, thank god for the ability to rollback.  Secondly, stay the fuck away from Trend Micro on Windows 7, the two are just not there yet.  Thirdly, wait it out for an upgrade to fix the problems AVG has with iTunes, it’s bound to be a quick fix.
