I’d read that iPhone 3G users who’d installed firmware 2.2.1 were experiencing sudden losses in battery time. When I first read this last week I made a the comment that I’d installed this update and hadn’t suffered the problem, but on Monday and again today my iPhone’s battery too took the hit. I went to the Vodafone store after work to check with them whether they’d heard anything about this, but they were none the wise and told me to come back in a few days if it continued, as it’d only been happening for 2 days thus far. I decided when I got home that I would restore the phone to it’s factory settings, although I was surprised that after doing so that firmware 2.2.1 was installed, not the pre-v2.0 that the phone had shipped with. I’m hoping that this will have fixed the problems, although I did read that the problem can be caused by not closing Safari fully and that it continues running in the background. One post suggested that in order to ensure that Safari had indeed ‘quit’ that you should hold down the home button for up to 10 seconds.
In restoring the iPhone to it’s factory state I have decided to turn off push email, I was only receiving this from Yahoo Mail in any case, my primary provider Gmail doesn’t yet support this feature. I was a little amazed when at the Vodafone store when the staff member suggested he only re-charges ever 3-4 days, clearly he’s not using his phone if this is the case! Fingers crossed!

Same problem here. I just installed 2.2.1 about a week ago, and since then I’ve twice had a very sudden drop in battery life. It’s not a faster *overall* drain… it’s a quick drop. I put it down with like 60%, come back to it a few hours later (no usage), and it’ll be at 5%.
Comment by Chris Z February 10, 2009 @ 11:37 pmWell it appears that my restoring the phone, and turning off push email has helped get my iPhone back in order. Sitting on the couch now (not on the phone) and its still pretty much at 90%+ power. That’s with far more usage, and two longish calls from a friend. Happy once more!
